Bittorrent Stats and Connectivity FAQ

Here is a checklist I made for people to go throught if you think that your upload/download stats are not updating correctly or if you have having other connectivity problems.

.::Check to make sure you are not firewalled or NATed (Azurues has a built in test for this). Many ISPs blacklist the standard bittorrent ports 6881-6889. So please use a port between 45000 and 65535 to insure maximum connnectivity. Also make sure to open the ports which you are using for bittorrent on your 3rd party software firewall or Windows firewall if you are using one.

.::Turn off DHT and Peer exchange. If you are not going throught the tracker, your stats cannot be updated.

.::Try a different bittorrent client. If you are using an obscure BT client and having trouble please consider trying a proven client like Azureus, uTorrent, or Bittornado before reporting it as an issue.

.::Check to see if you are having disconnect issues with you modem, router, or network. If you have a connection problem and get disconnected unexpectedly, your stats may not be updated correctly.

.::Make sure to stop the torrents manually. And check your profile right afterwards to see the update to your stats which should happen instantly. I have seen that this is the case myself so if it doesn't update almost instantly there is a problem.

.::If you have a dynamic IP you need to make sure that your IP and the IP in your account is the same. You can check your IP with www.whatismyip.com. If they are not the same, please log out and log back in and it should update to your current IP address.

.::If you have a router turn off the SPI (Statefull Inspection Firewall) and set your computers LAN address as the DMZ port. Bittorrent uses a lot of connections and a SPI firewall will sometimes hurt your connectivity. Setting the DMZ will make it so you do not have to open ports individually. An alternitive to using a DMZ would be to use UPnP if your bittorrent client and router support it or just forwarding the ports manually. (SPI turned on without the DMZ set and port triggering set up correctly will also work but it can sometimes be a pain to get right.) note: if you have a 99.99% torrent completion problem try turning off the DMZ port as this is a know issue for some routers.

.::With some other trackers I have noticed that your upload stats when leeching may be way off (I have not confirmed this as a problem with Datorrents). I have found that it seems to help if you stop the torrent and manually restart it after you complete downloading it and then restart it as a seed. (This last one is just speculation from my experience but it doesn't hurt to try it as it seems to help with some trackers)
