IRC Tutorial

Client / Server

To join in the fun, all you need is an IRC client program. The most popular clients are mIRC for Windows, ircII for UNIX, and Ircle for Macintosh. If you are browsing the Internet with Mozilla, you may use the ChatZilla plug-in.

Other clients include: X-Chat, IceChat and Colloquy.

Click here for the webclient, put in your nick and the channel #datorrents-chat and away you go!

How do I connect?

Once you have a client, you'll need a server. The DeltaAnime server is irc.deltaanime.net

You will then want to connect to a channel. We have numerous useful channels on Deltaanime, the most common being:
  • #thestaff - General help for DaTorrents forums, gallery, irc and other quibbles
  • #datorrents-chat - Where most people from the forums spend their time hanging out and chatting
  • #datorrents - Contains numerous bots that you can download anime/manga/movies/music from directly. How to do this is detailed further down this thread
There are many other channels, but these are the most common for the site users. To join a channel, type /join #channel

Nickname registration

If you want to use a certain nickname on the network and don't want anyone else to take it, you must register it with the network.

You can do so by typing (in any window): /msg nickserv register password email, of course substituting password for any password of your choosing and email with your email address.

Registering your nick will also allow you to be added to a channel's access list; for example, some of the people in #datorrents-chat have +'s beside their nicknames (for purely decorational purposes and generally to signify known users). Just be active and chat, and you too can have that +

You only have to register your nickname once. Every other time you connect from that point on, you need to prove who you are, with this command:
/msg nickserv identify password

To change your nick, type /nick newnick

What are some basic commands?

Here are some basic commands for IRC:

/server Sign on to a server /server irc.freenode.net
/nick Set your nickname /nick YourName
/join Join a channel /join #datorrents-chat
/msg Sends a message (either private or entire channel) Message the channel: /msg #datorrents-chat hello world! Send a private message: /msg JohnDoe Hi john.
/whois Display information about a user on the server /whois JohnDoe
/clear Clears a channel's text.
/away Sets an away message. Note: Type /away again to return from away. /away I'm away because...
/me Sends an action to the channel. /me loves pie. Would output to the chat in the case of JohnDoe: JohnDoe loves pie.

Direct Client-to-Client

Direct Client-to-Client (DCC) is a great way to download files directly from our range of bots. Speeds are great, and you do not have to upload anything back!

What can I download?

Dolph works hard to keep an up to date list on the forum, that can be found here. Use the thread search if you are looking for something specific. Make a note of the bot on which it is found (e.g Amida, Dat[004], etc) as the title of each post, and also the pack number.

Alternatively, you can search from within #datorrents by typing @find searchterm (e.g. @find naruto).

The bots are constantly reporting on the packs they contain, so don't worry about the amount of spam in the channel.

How do I download?

To use XDCC, one can send a private message (query) or send a CTCP command to a bot:

* /msg xdcc send # - Requests the specified pack number from the bot.
* /msg xdcc remove - Removes all files one has queued for sending. (This only works via msg.)
* /msg xdcc remove # - Removes the file in the specified queue position. (This only works via msg.)

If there are available slots in the bot, you should start receiving the file immediately. Otherwise, you will join a queue. Could be for minutes, could be for hours. No, there isn't anything we can do about this. Check the settings in your client to see if you are set to auto accept, ask to accept or deny file transfers.

Do not accept file transfers from people you do not know! Viruses and spyware is quite often transferred like this. For this reason, I have my client set to ask before downloading a file.

Check the autogreet at the top of the channel when you join to keep up to date with the lastest news.

FAQ

My download is slow!

This is usually the case with the more popular bots. The upload speed is spread, and can be significantly slow at times. Another problem can be a connection your side through a firewall.

I can't dowload at all!

Double check that you are not ignoring file send in your irc options. Any further issues, join #thestaff, and someone there should be able to help you.

Can I add my own bot to your list in #datorrents?

We welcome all requests from users, as our list of hosted files is always growing. Just make sure the files are suitable, and join #thestaff and ask to speak to either Shauna, ichigo or Evilgiggle.

Other issues may be answered here.
