Important Tracker News *vote Or Die*

please Read All Parts Of This Thread Before Voting!

Please also note that the hentai vote is a joke, and we'd simply count it towards the yes vote!

As many of you know, datorrents has been working on plans for a full overhaul of our system. At the same time, we've come up with the idea of changing the site from being a tracker to being a anime index with tracker abilities

How would this work? What is an index site?

Currently my fellow admins and I are taking part in the testing/coding of a new daTorrents system and wanted to know what people thought of it all.
As of right now it's quite hard todo external tracking, and our current stats have been hooped for almost a year now (and the planned upgrades right now stand a good chance of just not working).

A torrent index is like torrentspy, thepiratebay and most notibly, mininova.

Does that mean we'd need another place to track off of?

Not at all. On top of this, we'll be running a 100% public tracker that everyone is welcome to track off. to use it you don't need to have an account on the site or anything to download, etc, simply just use our announce URL. Once you start seeding, the tracker will keep, well, track of your torrent and share it to all your leechers/seeders.

So what would we loose?

Due to how indexers work, and the tracker we're looking at using, we'd loose ratios. What this means is that no ratios would be kept, nor really could be kept, on users.

But then people will be leeching like crazy! this doesn't help anyone!

While people may not like leechers (none of us do), we would have a section where users could report leechers that they catch on their clients. We can then IP ban the user if they're doing it hard core and just abusing the system.

Many communities also don't wish for their users to be moderated either, and so this would open daTorrents to them as well. :-)

OK, then what would we gain in this all?

For one, with the new tracker, we could finally keep up with the masses of users wishing to announce to us. At this time we keep around 45,000 peers, but a lot of the time users can't contact the server to announce. We expect this number to be closer to 60,000.

On top of this, i've now found a way to collect anime from MANY other sites, meaning that we wouldn't just have our own anime, we'd have anime posted on any of the large communities out there (demonoid, torrentspy, etc).

With such huge changes, the performance of the site as a whole would go up a HUGE amount (we're talking no more SQL drop outs, and slow page loading, etc).

If we go ahead with this, how soon would the change over happen?

The code base is being developed already, so if DAT doesn't use it, it will be put elsewhere. Including the building of a new skin, installation, migration, etc, it would take no more than a few days to complete.

How long will we have to decide?

I'll give this vote 1 week to bring up all comments, concerns, and just poll results.

Thanks,

~Francisco

Looks promising, I'm all for it. Losing ratio tracking shouldn't make too much difference, other sites can cope with it, and on top of that it hasn't been working for a while anway. Good work on getting it all going!

Few thoughts

1) Public Tracker - so do people need to upload their torrent to the tracker first before it works? or is it free game?

If we have a public tracker, I'd assume that the peer count would jump dramatically, so can the new tracker handle it?

2) loss of ratios - its hard enough to keep old torrents seeded. loss of ratios makes that even harder, i guess.

Also, why keep user accounts if you don't need one to upload torrents or track your own ratio?

We wouldn't need to keep accounts.

The idea of the user accoutns, is that a user can then mark torrents under thier name and such. We'll also introduce some other things to make regging a plus.

Public as in free game. The torrent doesn't need to be posted on us, but we'll be sure to ask the users todo so Though, with that being said, i'm fairly sure that we could put it in ***** mode, where it only works on info hashes in it's database, that we'd add as users upload.

The new tracker can handle 700,000 peers on a celeron.

EDIT -

Confirmed that we can put it in strict mode, so only torrents posted on DAT are tracked.

Sounds good.

Actually, closest thing for an anime-index would be TokyoTosho. ^^

I have to say I'm a big no for this. Since we have stopped banning cause of the fuxx0red ratios, the stats that we can see have been terrible. Torrents have started dying more regularly cause people don't see the point in hanging around to keep seeding if they don't have to.

On paper, yes, this is a great idea. Practically, we would be left with many people crying out for seeds, torrents being deleted and a hell of a lot of hit and run leechers.

Can we really expect people to report hit and run leechers from their client?

H.

If someone is bothered by it enough, why not?

No torrents would be deleted either since the system doesn't do a 'cleanup' like our current one.

Nothing would stop us from making a 'request seeders' part on there, where it would display on the side menu of 'how many people have asked for a reseed' on a list of torrents, with a full list being present on click.

Heck, we could even make a 'filling' type idea, where people would recieve points towards whatever we can think of, if they fill a users seed request.

we're building this, more or less, from the ground up so we can develop whatever we think is good.

I agree with Kirarin. Especially with bigger files, people would just leave as soon as their torrent was complete. I like how ratios enforce sharing.

No torrents being deleted and annoymous tracker use will just take more memory. Maybe it's just that I feel that the current tracker problems should be solved first before anything is added.

Also, because I serve small files (I translate for School Rumble), there's no way I can ever seek and destroy people not seeding.

EDIT: Did ratios disappear just now? For this? If the change has already been implemented, that kinda takes away the reason we're having a vote >_>

I don't think ratios enforce sharing. Ratios enforce people uploading for the sake of a big ratio so they can swing it around and act like they're better than others. I left hongfire because I couldn't stand that there.

My vote is emphatically yes.

Ratios are still there. They've been slightly screwed the last few weeks, cause of the tracker not measuring ratios correctly though.
