Based on what I've seen in the past, I would say no, so maybe we can keep some seeds around longer.

I'm a total NUB, so I have no friggon idea what the difference is...can somebody explain it to me (I mean, without making me feel EXTREMELY stupid...a little stupid, yes, that's acceptable)

Ratios have to go, the only time a leecher should be canned is if he/she limits blocks upload bandwidth. I have been on torrents where downloading is almost impossible and the one thing in common is 1 or 2 seeds and 0 other peers usually when another peer comes online it speeds up. Is it any coincidence that torrents like those are often abandoned at 99% or higher. (I've been sitting on two of those, one of them for two -insert expletive- months!) Not when the time needed to reseed the
torrent exceeds the amount of time needed to seed it the first time due to the following:

#1 Useless Tracker says "Sorry I don't exist!"
#2 Useless Tracker says "Sorry I don't remember that torrent."
#3 Useless Peer says "Whoops my file is corrupt, oh well, someone else has it"
#4 Useless Seeder says "Was I supposed to be uploading, umm see ya"

In reality ratios fail because they can't stop #1, #2 and #3 they may even reward a chronic #3. I'm not sure on that part though. #4 is such a blatent disregard of the peer to peer concept behind bittorrent that ratios are overkill. In addition for someone to get a 2.0 share ratio someone else MUST leech. Such a system that is designed to catch and ban leechers in place that creates leechers by its very existance is Illogical. Over at Hongfire I have seen year old+ torrents come back from the dead and they are quite open and have no ratio system.

The community aspect will either die or grow larger if the changes are done, hard to say but look at animesuki and what they have done for fansubs. This community can expand but it should be done slowly and properly.

Karma Zen If I download its minium 5x whatever the size is after that i will check every so often to make sure no one is stuck or there is seeds out there Ive down loaded 50gb and my upload is 161gb Do onto others as they did for you! my torrents are years old and I only got into torrents maybe a year ago u want to go private just to force people to seed who wants that kind of person I leached a couple only cause i moved it instead of copyng it something screwed up. sorry 1st post cranks me people whine about seeding!!! Firm believer in Karma Golden Rule etc. It is to bad there is not a good efficient way to monitor uploading Its what keeps bittorents alive

Why not just make it an reg only community then? then you have to register to get a data-torrent torrent and then you know you have to seed back or you will be cut off. plenty of ppl had registered before. its not like it would be a private community where you only get to invite others instead of a free sign-up. That would probably make the life of a torrent live twice as long and then you would have a clue who's downloading/seeding and would practically make it have no double/triple/quadruple torrents of the same things.

the idea of the anon users and ratios was kinda bad cause almost everyone did not know about the ratios or got nailed with a ban 1/2 way through a file. (like me). also if it went to register only, the current tracking software they have would work cause it tracked registered users ok (until some update or something that threw the "monkey wrench" into it).

anyhow i throw this idea out on the table. its up to the head guys as what to do about it. i just ask that it be considered and that it not be thrown out without being actually thought about and comprehended.

Looks like we have been "ratioless" for over a month and I don't see any problems. Time to take the announcement off the front page and get on with fixing the tracker so it at least show leechers and seeds. That announcement has been up so long it starting to look like no one cares.
