So, we've established that you need 100-120 rep to get another green box underneath your avatar. We've also decided that these green boxes do nothing. There must be something else that rep does otherwise there wouldn't really be much point in it existing on this forum.

The rep point system is purely cosmetic. In other forums such as HongFire, it is used to establish status in the forum community (members who have a lot of rep have a lot of clout in that particular forum community). In other forums, gaining enough rep allows forum members to gain access to special sections of forums that is otherwise restricted to low rep count forum members.
