For avatars you do this:

1. Go to User CP
2. Edit avatar
3. Either choose one from the category of "Predefined Anime" or "Custom Avatar" where you can find an image from your computer or load one up from a url or site.

For adding people to your buddy list, it goes like this:

1. Click on a user's name
2. Once you click on a user's name, if you look at the top left-hand corner, there is an option called 'Add so and so to your buddy list'. Click on it.
3. Then click save list and you're done.
