ACTUALLY the way it seems (I have Disgaea 2) there is no connection in the stories other than some of the characters from Disgaea are in Disgaea 2.
Seems to be a new story BUT set in the same universe. Makai Kingdom has a couple of references to the Disgaea series. (I think)
