What is the difference between Shota and Yaoi?

Yaoi is male on male action only
Shota is any material that has under-aged boys

Yaoi may contain Shota and vice-versa
However Shota may contain straight sex, which Yaoi forbids.

Stylistically, Yaoi is often more "Male"-style characters, that is the characters are typically larger and more muscular with rugged adult appearances.
On the other extreme are the "cute boy" characters who are very slender and "pretty" with some feminine features.

Shota is often very cute characters, or very feminine characters (sometimes called Fem-Boys). Some Shota includes older-looking characters, and rarely there are a few muscular characters. However, they are always universally young-looking characters.

Been a shota fan since 2001 (before I knew what shota was... lol)... Dont like yaoi at all (adult human male on adult human male anyway).
