As far as free goes there is MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite, I don't know if they'll exceed 256 columns. Then there are the commercial ones like Oracle and Microsoft that you mentioned. MySQL also has a commercial version of their database.

Just curious, but why do you need to go over 256 columns?

There is a lite/free version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. I think it was called "Express Edition". Well, I can not remember much of the software since we used it in my database class for the sake of having a good feel of different structured query language programs. You can download that via Microsoft's Website if you have a Genuine Copy of Windows(Not sure as of now).

And I have never tested if it will go beyond 256 columns. But most database tools for servers out there should THEORETICALLY support far more than 256 columns considering these software handle many many loads of data in real life applications.

256 columns? well im doing image processing and i need to pass a matrix of 320x320 to the database and as of now i have thought to convert it to 640x1 instead so i dont need to go over 256 columns.

anyway maybe i'll go try the free ones one by one first.

thanks for the replies ^^
