| Dreamer through Time | I've just been backing torrents onto discs.. Why? Because one of them just 'disappeared'. Normally I wouldn't have been too worried, but this one was on the seeding list..it was marked with a red x the other day and when I clicked to check/start, it started downloading from zero..the entire folder had vanished somehow. So for security reasons I started backing today the torrents that were ready. I wonder why, because the(external, usb) hd I got only 3 weeks ago, and there have not been any problems with it this far, or right now?.. Actually, the above is backstory; the question I want to ask concerns the backup process... I used Nero Data DVD to burn the files(speed lowest(4x)) And checked 'verify' .....And got a lot of those 'content/source in sectors different' first I tried again with a new disc;exactly same problem different labels(Sony/TDK); nope.. tried backing other files/folders on the hd; well,same.. shutting down any backup processes(including utorrent); like that would have helped.. made an all-out check for anything malicious on computer etc(nothing turned out..) But here's the funny part; each and every one of those discs worked that I tried watching/viewing (I went through a backup of a doujinshi-collection which consisted of small rar-files netting 1,5gb;extracting them to a different folder on desktop, and 'Hirameki AnimePlay PC'(torrent from datorrents);copied those iso:s to desktop;mounted with Daemon;installed;tried...... and burned ps2 game iso to dvd(yeah, verify failed there too..);played(on ps2) ......Believe or not, I didn't encounter any problems with those, or with any other backups(avi, mkv etc) so why does the 'verify' declare process failed. (Noted;I uninstalled and installed Nero but it didn't have any effect in this matter. And both my drives(internal/external) are pretty new too.) Anyone? ![]() |

| - | As for uninstalling Nero, Ahead distributes a little utility that you run behind the uninstallation program to get ride of everything. Cause their uninstall that comes with Nero usually doesn't get everything. Download Nero General Clean Tool 1.1.6.4 - Use Nero General Clean Tool to uninstall Nero or Nero related software - Softpedia I was search around and found this on the AfterDark forums it seems the poster had trouble with Alcohol's virtual driver conflicting with atapi.sys which caused his discs to burn fine but fail verification. I wouldn't be surprise if the daemon tools drive could cause similar problems, so you might try uninstalling daemon tools at least till you finish your back up. | Dreamer through Time | It must be Nero that spooks; as far I've tested verification programs, the files are the same, only thing modified in the sectors according to them is time(?). I made a deeper analysis and the file sizes and data are exactly the same; I just need to use another program in place of Nero to check the discs henceforth... EDIT: Follow-up:.. Well, the worst happened. The L:-drive crashed and everything inside went awol... The good news is most on it had been backed-up and the backups seems to be fine(despite Nero). I activated some older torrents for AHQ and Demonoid from other hd:s and restored a few of the backed up torrents from Datorrents, so the ratios won't take too much of an impact. I'll try to restore more of the lost torrents whenever time allows. Unfortunately not all was backed, lost were the newly completed torrents, and of course all the downloads..about 50gb worth Only downloads not affected were the single 157gb torrent on K: and a few game torrents directed to E:... I took time now to convert the L: to NTFS. All the diagnostics I did after the crash didn't find any bad sectors... I guess FAT32, 500gb hd external, and a LOT of active torrents were just a bit too fatal combination..(at least I hope it was only that..). I never had any problems like this with my second internal hd(also NTFS) when I worked that to its full extend(E: and F:, 750gb alltogether). I'll do the convert thing to K: as well, but will wait till the 'big' finishes, I dare not do it before. That's one torrent I DON'T want to start anew... So far it seems to run good. It could be my imagination, but speed seems to have improved as well. It's still often a red list when I come back from work, but at least it's downloading/uploading now even then, a change from before when I could meet a couple of hundred error messages about crashed program on the desktop/red x:ses on the list and no activity at all, when coming back. Lesson learned..Back-ups are important I learned it the hard way ![]() Blanchimont ![]() Last edited by vincent_10_27 : 05-31-2007 at 10:41 PM. Reason: Double Post. Please use the EDIT button. |
