New Website Design, Opnions needed

I just redesigned my art portfolio, and I'm looking for some opions/critiques.

http://aceman67.cabspace.com

Website was coded in Dreamweaver, is 100% W3C Compliant HTML 4.01 Transistional and CSS 2.0, and is best viewed @ 1280x1024 (1600x1200 recomended)

Graphics all done in Photoshop CS2.

Have it the main portion center or ever better have it automatically resize to fit the display/window width. Right now it is sitting on the left side of the screen on my 1600x1200 display. Stick the WC3 complilace images centered on the bottom of the main portion and use smaller matching (with your site) images if possible. You might also want to center your navigation links.

It would be hard to center the design, since what I was going for required a fixed background: http://aceman67.cabspace.com/images/background.jpg

Fixed the Menu though.

Looks centered to me, and I like it. It's not cluttered or incoherent like some ametuer websites. I like your wallpaper section. I'm a big fan of fractals (check out February Desktop thread top of page 2).

Yeah, I like it.

I'm not an Amature man, I'm not a pro, but I'm no amature. Site was hand coded and finished in just over 3 hours, and only needed minor corrections to make it w3c compliant. What took the longest was the making the iamges, and then uplaoding the website (about 30 mb) to a server with a slow uptake.

The site may look centered at lower resolutions, but the larger res you use, the more of the background is seen, and you can see that its all shifted up to left hand corner. This was done intentionally.

This is what the website looks like on a 1920x1440 screen: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/49391447/

Why was that done intentionally? Couldn't you make that main portion in CSS with the same look and then you would be able to center it?

I wanted the white box that houses the content to be semi transparent so that the background shows through, I also wanted the drop shadow fro both the Title images, and the content box itself, and since the only format that would support that kind of high quality alpha transparency is PNG files, which isn't widely supported by browsers, I stuck with what I have.

those banners are too big IMO and I think the text in them too large? try not to use a font that is popular, you're using it as an image banner so why not go for a fancier font?

The background is a bit distracting, try for something more simple like diagonal pixel lines (I think you know what i'm on about x.x) it's a tiled thing, not hard =)

I like the navi though, very visible, good thing and perhaps line the wc3 buttons along the bottom in a row?

----

Sorry for sounding a bit bitchy, i'm doing we design at uni and I like being critical =) It's a helping thing, nothing more =) Good work though

I was a web design student 2 years back, and I showed my design to my old prof, who's been a Contemporary design professor for about 20 years, and he loved it, saying it that it suited my style.

As for the popular font, I don't think Arial Black is all that popular Especially on the web, where Verdana is king.

I wanted to use something that reflected and used my art for the background, and I also wanted something recent, so I chose the last wallpaper that I did (Which got some high praise from some abstract wallers on dA.

I would put the W3C buttons on the bottom row, but that would only add to the scroll bar for 1024x768 screen res users, which I tried to minimize, even though I primarly designed the page for 1280x1024 res users.

Make the banners smaller then? They REALLY are too big, so big they scare me, and again, it's not so much the font but the SIZE.
