That's an easy way to install applications but do not forget about the repositories your program'll need. Wrong repo can cause instability and lower performance of the application as well as the OS. I have been to a lot of Linux's forums and most the problems that I've encountered with are these repo's. Some doesn't know what to use, or some do not know how to disable certain repo to boost performance. What repo must be disabled? that depends on how'd you configure your system.

I seldomly use Ubuntu Dapper. But RPM-based is not too different from it. The only thing is rpm's are offered for these kinds of releases to make installation of apps and searching for dependencies easier.

I have been using a RPM based computer for my main desktop system since 2000. I have used apt based systems too. I really can't tell that much difference as long as your sources (repositories) are properly configured you are good to go. I used KDE so I don't know much about Gnome desktops.

Mplayer is all you need. When everythng is installed will handle whatever you feed it. I use the GUI frontend called Kmplayer. Sometimes I use Kaffine but it is not as good at picking the correct codecs for some encodes, [a4e] encodes always have the wrong audio codec selected for some reason. Mplayer has no problem with the same file.

MS is forcing DRM on everyone. If you don't want or like that switch to Linux. By supporting Microsoft you are supporting DRM and the loss of your Anime.

I play Quake 3 Arena and NeverWinter Nights on my Linux machine. If it's a game you want to play, check around to see if people are having any luck getting it playing, and buy the game and install it if thery are. My FPS under Linux is faster than this same system under W2K.

Tends just to be Quake and UT, if they moved BF2 or CS over then I'd do the same.

Haha, I was just about to ask if anyone knew the performance hit on windows games running under linux. But don't you have driver issues? I'm told ATI cards expecially (which I have) have problems with linux sometimes.
But I think I'm convinced, I'll install Debian next weekend if I get round to it and then I'll buy cedega. I knew you could get emulators, but I assumed they caused problems and reduced performance.

ATi doesn't actually have these driver issues with Linux. Linux has a lot of drivers that you might want to use. Properly installing an ATi card would depend on what distro you are going to use. I have an ATi card as well and it works fine on both FC and Ubuntu releases. It's probably that the one's who told you that ATi are having issues cause they didn't compile their drivers properly. either that or they have the wrong source to use with the gfx card.

Emulators are fine, they don't put much stress on the system. I have run tons of emulators from arcades to psx emulators and I only got a few instances of emulator crashing due to a flaw in the coding. But nonetheless, it all worked fine.

I've had to re-install Ubuntu several times due after installing the ATi Drivers because after the re-boot, all I get is a Black screen and the install is useless after following the Guide here to the the letter: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

EDIT

hmm... seems they updated it from the last time I read it...

It is true that nvidia drivers are better then ati drivers on linux. but u shouldnt have any problems unless ...

you are running and older version of kernel 2.4 or 2.6, i cant remember exactly what versions actually had alot of trouble with ati but if u update ur kernel to the latest patch you will not have any problems wat so ever unless u didnt compile the driver correctly.

also Emulators run great on linux cause most linux distros eg. gentoo debian or Freebsd (i know its not linux but still a great distro) are not bloated with bullshit like windows is. i just downloaded battlefield 2142 demo and i ran it on cedega through my vida box with less cpu usage and less memory then i did on windows (the graphics card i have to admit was working slightly harder then on windows) my FPS on bf2142 was around 70 at the spawn and 50 in heavy combat.
