More Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Interesting news: It appears that GAINAX is planning to release 4 new Evangelion movies, the first one in summer 2007. At first I thought it was only a rumor, but having seen this article, it appears to the truth:

http://community.hirameki-int.com/mo...php?blog_id=69

Quote:
GAINAX is going to remake WHAT!?

The latest issue of Newtype (sold in Japan on the tenth of every month) was sold ahead of time in a few stores, and some of the readers who ought it have leaked news onto the internet that has anime fans in an uproar.
According to them, the anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion" -- a social phenomenon when it was broadcast, and still a legend ten years later -- will be remade as a series of four movies.

At this point, all we know is the following:

-There are going to be four "New Evangelion Movies" - a beginning, a middle, an end, and an epilogue. The first part is scheduled for release in the summer of 2007.

-The general director will be Hideaki Anno, and the director will be Kazuya Tsurumaki. Character design will be done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and Ikuto Yama****a will be in charge of mecha design.
The animation will be done by Color Studio (a studio recently created within Gainax by Hideaki Anno, exclusively to make the new Evangelion movies.)

According to an interview with the producer, Mr. Ootsuki, the movies will follow roughly the same timeline as the television series, but the story will be completely different. The movies will be "a new work - neither a remake nor a correction." Unlike another recent anime-turned-movie remake, "Mobile Suit Z Gundam: A New Translation," there will be a large amount of new material. Supposedly, even viewers who have not seen the show will be able to enjoy the movies, which will be more accessible than their predecessor, but still not unchallenging. However, the deliberate use of obscure and difficult words that characterized the television series will be absent in the movies. Mr. Anno, reflecting on the original series, said only "Eva is fascinating," and then had to hold back tears. The creators of the
Evagelion movies realize that they are in a sense rebelling against the current anime world, and are prepared to draw the curtain on the age of anime that began with the original Eva.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of "Neon Genesis Evangelion," and Gainax and other companies have been releasing a fresh flood of
Evangelion-related goods. Still, this latest announcement is sure to
overshadow everything else out there, and legions of anxious fans are
waiting to hear more.

I would rather they made a second series or an OVA, rather than (as this seems to suggest) trying to sum up an entire series in a few movies. Although I have also heard rumours of a live acted Eva movie comming out.

Interesting, I just hope they do a quality job on them. Four movies is a lot, especially if they are sequential (4 X 1.5hrs = 6hrs).

If this rumor is true, that would rock, Evangelion was the first anime I ever really got into and watched from beginning to end.

As for the live action movie, WETA workshop, of Lord of the Rings fame, is doing the special effects, and the movie is currently in pre-production.

There have been rumours about the live action Eva movie for as long as I can remember. They never seem to have been substantiated, and I think it would suck. If it was done with Japanese actors (which is how we would want it), the sfx budget would not be enough to keep fans happy. If the budget was high enough, we would have to put up with American's raping the characters...

But I guess I could live with some more Eva animation.

Ummm... NewtypeUSA had an entire article a year or two ago, and if you look at the website that I gave above, the movie is infact in pre-production, its happening, just very slowly.

I know about this, and it's interesting. However what I want is that damned Weta Workshop Live Action one that's been in pre-pre-production for years. Thanks to my intimate contacts I know that both GAINAX and the head of Weta are both very very interested in making it, the heads of both even have a mutual obsession with model trains and got off well together. Korean financial backers have been getting stroked for the past year or so and look like they're on board as well. It's just that Weta seems to be turning into everyones ***** thanks to doing a billion dollars better than most on LOTR resulting in overworking. Peter Jackson himself is making two more personal movies Lovely Bones and Dambusters which will mean he will probably be unrelated. It's Richard Taylor, the head of Weta rather than Peter Jackson that is interested in doing Evangelion. Richard's the nerd. Other things such as that fantasy trilogy, Halo, Black Sheep, etc all seem to be getting pushed forward over Evangelion. Not that I don't want to see most of these movie. Apparently they get more than twice the number of emails concerning Evangelion at Weta than any other project, even LOTR or their current ones. The two companies have the interest, probably the finances; the general populace is more than interested and will surely make a profit. I just wonder why nothing is happening.

However these movies are really unexpected, there was so much interest in doing a new Eva movie, but now it looks like they're going to fill up the time themselves. Essentially the Evangelion franchise is one of the best besides perhaps Ghost in the Shell (another companies) and it has to be kept rolling. I don't know if this is going to kill the Live Action Movie but it might. It might also be a fundraiser for it, I dunno. Evangelion itself has sort of been whored out. While ultimately confusing, the 26 episode series was standalone. It's only Hideaki Annos vengance that probably resulted in End of Evangelion, the death threats he received due to the confusing ending of Evangelion even flash on screen during the movie. He intended to make it as OTT violent, and a thousand times more confusing. Some people don't like it, and claim it was just like a death throe to bring forth more money, but I do like it and don't think so.

These new ones on the other hand are far more likely to be a case of 'CLEAR! *ZAP*' on Evangelion, whether purely for cash or that the author has had another burst of paranoid psychotic inspiration is unknown. It's not like they ever actually stopped coming up with new Evangelion stuff. Apart from the multitudenous pile of Evangelion you bought, there's another series based on the happy dream world Shinji invented in his mind in episodes 25-26 called Angelic Days. And of course there's the merchandise. More prolific than anything else. Even in the Australian and NZ stores they just dominate in their sheer number. The number of Asuka and Rei combos are ridiculous. Just talking about figure statues, every size from like a centmetre to lifesize are avaliable, and in themes... Aphrodite, Christmas, Nurse, Swimsuit, Military, chibi, gashapon, nekomimi, angel, Angel (as in Angel from evangelion), school uniform, ninja, pyjama time, maid, biker samurai, cowboy, mermaid, or my favourite Gothic Lolita to name a few. Those are all examples taken from one Australian site, you can get all of these from http://www.tamarket.com.au/models/model.htm

I myself have a small amount of the stuff:

Hmm...interesting. I watched the entire anime in one big marathon at a friend, and I must say two things:
1. It knocked me back. It really messes up your brain. To quote my friend, this is the kind of anime that you watch one episode, then you stay for about half an hour or more and just stare at the moon or the ceiling.
2. I have no ideea what more could they add to it. I must say, it was perfekt the way it was, and I don't wanna see another series ruined by the secon part, like so many good movies were.
