this should have been a poll

I would prefer dub if the translations were accurate. It's just more enjoyable to me to listen to the characters and not split my attention between the show and the written dialog.

Yeah.. I'm right down the middle I guess.. I like dubbed because it's easier to watch whats really going on and not miss anything.. but I like subbed because sometimes the Japanese voice overs are a bit better and the subtitles sometimes put what they are actually saying instead of leaving or adding things.

I'm about 75%/25% in my preference with the larger preference going to subtitles....

but maybe that's because I love language, study it all the time, and pick up on it WICKED fast. If a show is done right you don't have to read 100% of the subtitles to understand the content of their words. 55%+ of communication is body language anyways.

Old battle still rages on.. Who will win this mighty battle of subjective/personal opinions?? xp

Still I have to say that almost all anime is destroyed when dubbed, to me at least, most dubbing tend to be pronounced lamely and without any affection, more like the voiceactors read a monoton dialogue directly from the script. No effort for the characters personality nor the situation..

This I feel is correct in 90% of all dubbing cases, the few exceptions may be ghost in the shell, cowboy bepop and recently I really liked the way that some of the dubbed bleach characters were made, except for how they pronounce "zanpakutou", which gives me goose bumps..

Kolyce....I agree (almost)....Subs win the MAJORITY of the time (like I said above 75%+)...

But what about the rare anime like Cowboy Bebop that pulls off a decent English dub. I will agree though, MOST dubs are idiotic....POINT IN CASE: Slayers...WTF....seriously WTF??

that would defeat the purpose of subs being more accurate; if you just want the jist of it, dubs work just fine.

Well, for me, it really depends. I've been on both sides before.

Subs are usually the favorite, because you get to hear the original quality of the seiyuus, while still being able to read what they're saying and watching all at the same time.

The downside to this is when you've downloaded a sub made by a rather poor group. For example (and I'm not going to post any specific groups), I've seen groups using emoticons and smilies in their subs, and since I actually know a bit of Japanese myself, I can tell when some of the translation is actually quite different from what is actually said. However, usually this doesn't happen, or you will manage to find another group that did a better job anyway.

With dubs, some are actually quite well done. I've watched only a few however; Shakugan no Shana, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam SEED, and a few others that I don't think are worth mentioning (I haven't exactly watched the whole thing). Cowboy Bebop was pretty interesting, I think the voice actors managed to capture their respective characters quite well. Gundam SEED and Shakugan no Shana use the same voice actors (Lacus is Yoshida, Frey is Shana I think, I don't remember). I still have the dubs of Shakugan no Shana sitting on my hard drive, and they're actually quite good, and funny, because I'm also replaying the original voices and subs in my head. The translations are quite closely matched, and the atmosphere is also really good.

On the other hand, some dubs can be absolutely horrifying, when actors get overly enthusiastic, or speak strangly when making speeches, because they have to lip sync it and keep the show in time at the same time. And there's really no way to fix this, because they are the original dubs and I don't think they're willing to make a do over. And sometimes the voices just do not fit. At all.

So with subs, they can be fixed, but with dubs, they really can't, not unless you're willing to create your own version, in which case, I'd really like to see something like that. Reminds me of the Yugioh Abridged thing on Youtube. If you haven't heard of it then don't mind what I said, or check it out, it's actually quite hilarious and I believe it's only 1 or 3 people doing all the voices.

My vote is on subs, japanese voice actors are much more subtle than american voice actors most of the time, and have, in turn, more emotion and feeling rather than spirit. But if I see a good dub, I wouldn't mind watching it.
