The reason when buying a video game system always depends on yourself. It's not going to matter much whatever the rest say about the system. Take example for Wii, a lot of people liked them, but I do know lots of people who don't like them as well. Check the games and the official sites. Although a key point that will greatly turn your decision in getting one is whether the system has good games or is the system not faulty.

Games for the PSP is not bad for my personal preference. As far as the PSP's game library goes, it's quite not too bad for portable games. I bought 6 games and 2 UMD-movies. Homebrew actually keeps me busy while not playing a commercial game.

For the system not being faulty, well nothing can tell that, there'll always be two faces of the coin. Even if I secure you that the system is not too damaging and it is worth your money, hell, you might be one of those unlucky person and get a faulty system and won't like it based on your expectations. So what the hell is my advice for?

That said, I do own a PSP TA-079, factory 1.5, and I am running not OE but IE firmware instead.
