@Andres: I would NEVER install that. You don't need all those codecs and they just cause conflicts and problems. I've seen so many people that have installed those packs only to have to uninstall them because some game or video screwed up.
You only really need at most Real Media Alternative, Quicktime Alternative, DIVX, xvid and then maybe AC3 codec. Even then really on a 'as needed' bases if you use VLC since it can play a lot of stuff without codecs . If a video doesn't work, use GSpot to identify what codec is required. You'll save yourself a lot of headache if you install each codec individually and not lumped together. |
You might be able to play .rmvb container files on VLC if the video codec is listed on it's libavcodec. However, if the video codec of a .rmvb file is a real video then you can't play the file on VLC. Why? i'll explain.
- VLC cannot use external codecs aside from libavcodec that comes with it. If you don't believe it. Then read the whole updated official documentation for VLC. i read it again before i post this and it says there that VLC cannot use external codecs.
As i have mentioned. you might have a success in playing a .rmvb file if the video codec is other than real. First you must now, that a .rmvb file is not a codec. it's a proprietary container format for Real Media Player. However, a few months after the release of .rmvb some people(one of them is my acquiantance, but not irl) reverse engineered the .rmvb container and found a way to contain a .rmvb with a .wmv video format inside. So there's a possibility to play a .rmvb with VLC.

If you look at what VLC can play, it cannot play real media's even if you have a standalone Real media filter like Real Alternative.
If you want a very good media player i suggest getting MPlayer.
