| Uber-Virus Alert So, I'm starting this thread to help my fellows know about some of the most terrifying viruses out there. If you come across a new one, please post some information here and save your friends some heartache.
Just to give you a clue what kinds of Uber-Viruses I meant, take a gander at this...
I downloaded an application called "Drempels." Its used to make weird, spiraling backgrounds and screensavers. However, the version I downloaded also included a little...bonus. There was a virus hidden in the install packages.
The virus infects the OS files, particularly the ones that relate to virus killing and system restores. Even if you manage to delete the actual, active virus, the virus can reinstall itself whenever you: reactivate your computer, install a new update or other piece of software, or anything else that activates OS files for any reason.
This virus can be identified by the way it trashes your computer. First it triggers a cascade of error effects. (I've researched all of the error messages and none of them are legit.) Then it attacks your visuals and audio, causing 'off-ish' displaying and throwing off your audio playback. After that it starts screwing around with the windows explorer. At this point, it will shut down any transfers after only twenty minutes by generating a bogus error.
As far as I can tell, the only way to kill this bug once and for all is to completely redo your computer. (Wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything.) Its a serious pain, so...try to avoid catching this @#$%ing bug at all costs.
I left a warning at Downloads.com, where I downloaded the contaminated program.
Surf safe.
