A lot of older machines (Older meaning, like old, old. AKA P3's and maybe some early P4's) won't run H.264/x264 very well because of the processing power required to decode the video. However, I haven't heard anything about them having trouble decoding XviD video.

As far as size goes, it does matter some. But if the video is good quality, even at 704x396 it will still look fine on higher resolution screens (even at 1080i). But it's still like comparing two images (one image at 704x400 and one at 1280x720).
